The wren painting illustrates a tiny and inconspicuous bird, that is most recognisable by its loud, shrill, rattling voice. It is a warm brown bird, barred and mottled with shades of buff and dark brown. The stocky shape and permanently cocked tail are its characteristics. It occupied a huge range of different habitats and sings virtually throughout the year.
It has a long thin slightly curved beak used for probing for food among walls and bank crevices. Their food consists of fly and insect larvae, and spiders.
The male builds several nests one of which the female chooses and lines with feathers. Hard hit by severe winters but a prolific breeder.
This is an original watercolour painting on Fabriano artistico paper. It is window mounted on ivory, size 30 x 40 cms when mounted.
