The Barn Owl painting illustrates the ethereal ghost-like owl of country tales. It has golden-buff upper parts emblazoned with oval patches of white, silver and black. The facial disc is white bordered by a fine heart-shaped ring, with dark eyes.
It lives in open country, farmland with hedges and rough ground, and nests in barns, ruins, haystacks, hollow trees and cliff holes. The unlined nest is invariably situated in a hole, but may simply occupy the corner of any old building. Small rodents and other small birds make up its diet.
It has an eerie long drawn-out shriek, often uttered in flight and it can be seen at dusk as it flies low over the ground with its long wings. One of the most beautiful of British birds, approximately 13 inches in length.
This is an original watercolour Barn owl painting on Fabriano artistico paper. It is window mounted on ivory, size 40 x 50 cms when mounted.
