GREATER SPOTTED WOODPECKER
This greater spotted woodpecker painting illustrates an extremely agile climber, about 9 inches in length. The male has a distinct red patch on the nape, which is lacking in the female, but the juvenile has a whole red crown, otherwise all are boldly pied, with oval white patches on the wing.

Widespread in Britain, the greater spotted woodpecker lives in woodlands and forests and has now spread to gardens and parks. It probes into bark crevices and hacks away loose bark to get at the larvae of wood boring insects for its food.

In the breeding season the greater spotted woodpecker will take the eggs and young of other hole-nesting birds. Drumming is performed by both sexes and is commonly heard during the breeding season in spring. It acts as a territorial defence, and is produced by beating the bill rapidly on dead branches, up to 10 times a second.

This is an original greater spotted woodpecker painting on Fabriano artistico paper. It is window mounted on ivory,  size 30 x 40 cms when mounted.
