WHEATEAR
This wheatear painting illustrates a compact ground-dwelling bird with a prominent white rump which extends to the sides of the tail which has a black centre and a black tip. This is a feature that distinguishes it from a number of other birds that visit Britain in the summer. The wings are black and a black stripe extends along the side of the face over the eye. The underparts are pale orange becoming lighter on the belly. The female, like the male in winter, is much duller being warm brown above and creamy buff below.

The  habitat of the wheatear is open ground especially moorlands and lowlands with short grass, also areas of coastal shingle. The nest is placed in a hole in the ground or wall, or beneath a clod of earth. It consists of a cup of grass lined with hair, feathers or wool.

The food of the wheatear is insects and their larvae, ants, spiders and centipedes.

British birds winter in South Africa, south of the the Sahara, arriving here between March and June and returning in August to October.

This is an original watercolour wheatear painting on Fabriano artistico paper. It is window mounted on ivory,  size 28 x 36 cms when mounted.
