Grey Heron

The original watercolour painting of the Grey Heron illustrates the largest and most commonly found heron  in Britain. It spends much of its time standing motionless in shallow waters waiting for fish to swim within reach of its dagger-like bill.

The long bill and legs are yellow. The back is grey and the head and neck are white with a black stripe running down the front of the neck to the breast. In flight the legs extend beyond the tail, while the neck tucks back on itself, giving a bulky shape.

It is found in many freshwater habitats, ponds, lakes, reservoirs, floods and marshes. It is also found on brackish habitats on estuaries and open shore.

The grey heron breeds in tree top colonies, occupying traditional sites which are used year after year.  Its food is predominantly fish but also amphibians, small mammals, birds and insects. Some vegetation is also eaten.

This is an original watercolour Grey Heron painting on Fabriano artistico paper. It is window mounted on ivory,  size 30 x 40 cms when mounted.
