Green woodpecker original watercolour

SKU: GWoriginal Category:

The Green Woodpecker painting illustrates the largest of British woodpeckers which lives in parkland, heaths and commons with plentiful trees. It can be recognised by its distinctive colouring. Both sexes are bright green above with lemon-yellow rump and a sharp attenuated tail. The crown is bright crimson. The long bill is strong and black and is used for hacking at tree bark to feed on the larvae of wood-boring insects. It has a long extendable tongue, but also feeds  on the ground for ants, their eggs and pupae, and also spiders.

Its call sounds like laughter and, in some districts, is given the name  ”yaffle”. The green woodpecker rarely drums like other woodpeckers, but also nests in a hole in a tree trunk.

This is an original watercolour Green Woodpecker painting on Fabriano artistico paper. It is window mounted on ivory,  size 30 x 40 cms when mounted.
