CRESTED TIT

The Crested Tit painting illustrates a bird that, in Britain, is confined to the Scottish Highlands. The habitat is mature Scots pine forests with decaying wood and also mature conifer plantations with dying trees.

It is an agile little bird, four and a half inches long, that is less gregarious than other members of the tit family. The bird has brown upper parts with a prominent black and white chequered crest. The face and cheek are white with distinct black markings and the under parts are white with a wash of warm buff on the flanks.

The Crested tit feeds on insects and their larvae, also pine seeds and berries. It nests in a hole, quite near to the ground, excavated by the female, in rotten wood such as a broken tree stumps or post and is lined with moss and hair.

This is an original crested tit painting on Fabriano artistico paper. It is window mounted on ivory,  size 28 x 35 cms when mounted.
