NUTHATCH
This Nuthatch painting illustrates the unique ability of the bird to move down a tree trunk as easily as it moves up. With dove-grey upperparts, black primary feathers  and white corner tips on the short square tail, there is a bold black eye-stripe and an orange-buff chest and belly. The bill is thick but sharply pointed and the legs and feet are strong and sharply clawed.

The nuthatch lives in deciduous and mixed woods with old mature trees, also in hedgerows, gardens and parks where trees are found. It feeds on insects in the bark also nuts, acorns and seeds. Its name is derived from”nut-hack” , a reference to its ability to break open nuts by hacking them with  its bill.

This is an original watercolour Nuthatch painting on Fabriano artistico paper. It is window mounted on ivory,  size 30 x 40 cms when mounted.
