The Dipper painting illustrates a rotund, chunky bird with a short, often cocked tail. It is a dark brown colour except for a bold white patch on the chin and breast bordered below by a chestnut coloured brown on the belly.
The dipper spends all of its time alongside, in or beneath fast flowing streams. It perches freely on rocks in midstream and feeds by picking aquatic creatures from the water’s surface or by wading in and frequently submerging to pick them from the bottom. Also eaten are molluscs and crustaceans, worms, tadpoles and small fish.
This is an original watercolour Dipper painting on Fabriano artistico paper. It is window mounted on ivory, size 30 x 40 cms when mounted.
